Fear, F**k Everything And Run, False Evidence Appearing Real. No matter how you slice it, it is the biggest demotivator people have.
I am afraid I will not make it in this business, I fear what everyone will say about my new occupation, I fear I will be a laughing stock of my friends. How do we get around this? We have all heard the absence of fear is faith, and both cannot exist in the same place. One great way I have found around this is commitment to massive action. This is not my first and foremost thought at any time, but the best of the thoughts that hopefully I bring to mind. It is the one that works, on a pragmatic scale.
As I write the I am going to speak to a dozen men in a detox facility here in Orlando. Sharing my experience strength and hope as a fellow in recovery. I have done this a few times before, and I have always gotten more from it than I feel I have put in. But I try to be the person I would like to see if I was in the detox, humble, sincere and compassionate. This is the least the men (and women) in recovery deserve.
The beautiful thing about all this is that these experiences, as little as they are that seem so big and gnarly, build the character it takes to be a better leader and in my case a better man as well. Some days it feels like just getting out of bed is an accomplishment, and to many this may be the case. Other days I take on bigger and more comfort zone stretching experiences, these are the ones we need to cultivate.
Start little, act courageously, finish big. My start little is writing this post despite my concerns about how it is taken, doing it anyway, and doing the same next post.
